What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students take a clear position on a topic or text. They support that opinion with relevant facts, specific details, and logical reasons.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student states a clear opinion and stays focused on it. The student uses relevant facts, details, and reasons that help convince the reader.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may state a preference without giving evidence. They may repeat the same reason, use unrelated facts, or treat personal feelings as facts.
How to Assess It
- Use this exit ticket: “Should recess be longer? State your opinion, then support it with one fact, one detail, and two reasons.”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs opinion and evidence cards to sort, then have them build a persuasive paragraph from the strongest supporting cards.
Ask students to write: “Should fourth graders have homework?” Require a clear opinion and three different supporting reasons.
Play Evidence Match by having teams connect opinion cards to relevant facts and reject evidence that does not fit.
Have students write a letter to the principal proposing one school improvement, supported by survey results, observations, and reasons.
