What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students state a clear opinion about a topic or text. They support that opinion with reasons and use linking words to connect their ideas.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student clearly names an opinion and gives two relevant reasons. The writing stays focused and uses linking words such as because, also, and so.

Common Misconceptions

Students may name a preference without giving a reason. They may list facts that do not support their opinion or switch opinions partway through the piece.

How to Assess It

Give this exit ticket: “Which is better for recess, a ball or jump rope? State your opinion and give two reasons.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Have students sort picture cards into “best classroom pet” choices, then choose one and write two reasons on sticky notes.

  2. Ask, “Should students have homework?” Students state their opinion, then explain two reasons to a partner before writing.

  3. Play Reason Match by pairing opinion cards with supporting reason cards, then discuss why each match makes sense.

  4. Students write a note to the principal recommending one new playground item and support the choice with two reasons.
