What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students tell what they think or prefer about a topic. They use pictures, spoken words, or writing to explain one reason for their choice.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student states a clear preference and gives one related reason. Their drawing, dictated words, or written sentence helps the reader understand the choice.

Common Misconceptions

Students may name a topic or fact without telling what they think. They may repeat their choice after “because,” give an unrelated reason, or worry that every word must be spelled correctly.

How to Assess It

Ask, “Which is better for recess, swings or slides?” Have students draw their choice and complete, “I think ___ because ___.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Set out two classroom books, then have students choose one, draw it, and add a reason they would recommend it.

  2. Ask, “Should our class have a pet?” Students share an opinion and complete the sentence, “I think ___ because ___.”

  3. Play Reason Match by pairing opinion cards, such as “Summer is best,” with reason cards that clearly support each opinion.

  4. Have students make a lunch suggestion for the cafeteria using a drawing and the frame, “Please serve ___ because ___.”
