What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students take a clear, specific position and support it with evidence that directly fits the claim. They explain why each piece matters and order ideas so the argument builds logically.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student states a focused position, selects strong evidence, and explains the connection between each detail and the claim. The reasons build in a logical order rather than repeating or drifting off topic.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may list facts without explaining how they support the position. They may use weak examples, repeat the claim as reasoning, or arrange points in an order that is hard to follow.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short editorial. Ask them to write one claim, cite one relevant detail, and add two sentences explaining how that detail supports the claim.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups claim, evidence, and reasoning cards to sort into logical argument chains, then ask them to defend their arrangement.
Ask students to write which school rule they would change, then support their choice with one fact and a clear explanation.
Play Evidence Match by having teams pair claims with the strongest evidence card and explain why weaker cards do not fit.
Have students examine two product reviews and write which recommendation is better supported by specific details and reasoning.
