What Students Need to Do

Students reread a draft from a reader's point of view and fix places that sound unclear, repetitive, choppy, or poorly connected. They then proofread their own work and a partner's work for errors.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can turn a rough draft into writing that is easy to follow and sounds natural. The final copy uses precise words, clear paragraph links, varied sentences, and correct conventions.

Common Misconceptions

Students often treat revision as fixing commas and spelling only. They may add transitions that do not show the actual relationship between ideas. Some vary sentence length but create fragments or run-ons.

How to Assess It

Give students a short draft with unclear wording, repeated sentence patterns, a weak paragraph break, and four mechanical errors. Ask them to revise it and label two revision choices and two edits.

   Print a draft, cut it into sentence strips, and have pairs reorder it, combine choppy sentences, and insert transitions on sticky notes.

   Ask students to explain which two changes would most help a reader understand their draft, then make those changes and write a reason for each.

   Run an editing relay where teams correct one marked issue at a time, including spelling, punctuation, sentence structure, paragraphing, and capitalization.

   Have students revise a mock email to a principal so the request is clear, organized, appropriately worded, and free of errors.
