What Students Need to Do

Students reread a draft and use teacher questions or a checklist to improve the ideas, order, sentence flow, and word choice. They also correct spelling, capitals, grammar, and punctuation.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students use a checklist and teacher feedback to make a draft clearer and easier to follow. They add or move ideas, improve repeated or vague language, and correct grade-level convention errors.

Common Misconceptions

Students often think revising means fixing spelling and punctuation only. They may add details that do not fit, move events out of order, or replace words without improving meaning. They may also miss errors when rereading silently.

How to Assess It

Give students this draft: “on saturday I went to the park. I went home. I zoomed down the tall slide. it was fun.” Ask them to reorder ideas, add one detail, replace “fun,” and correct conventions.

   Cut apart a four-sentence story, then have pairs reorder the strips, add a detail, and correct capitals and end marks.
