What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students reread a draft with an adult or peer and find places that need improvement. They add, remove, replace, or move words and sentences. Their changes make ideas clearer, better organized, and smoother to read.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can identify a part that is unclear, out of order, repetitive, or awkward. The student makes focused changes that improve meaning and flow. The revised draft uses clearer, more precise words.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think revising only means fixing spelling, capitals, and punctuation. They may add extra words without making ideas clearer. Some rewrite the whole piece instead of changing selected parts.
How to Assess It
- Give students a four-sentence draft with one unclear idea and one awkward sentence. Ask them to revise both parts and explain one change.

Ways to Teach It
Cut apart a short draft into sentence strips, then have pairs reorder the sentences and explain why the new order works better.
Use a partner conference prompt: Which part is clearest, and which part needs another detail or a better word?
Play Revision Spinner with choices such as add a detail, move a sentence, combine sentences, or replace a weak word.
Write and revise a classroom announcement so families can quickly understand the event, date, location, and needed materials.
