What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students reread a draft and use feedback from a peer or teacher to make it clearer. They improve ideas, order, sentence flow, and word choice.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can spot places where a reader may get confused or lose interest, then make useful changes. The revised draft has focused details, logical order, smooth sentences, and specific words.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often treat revision as fixing spelling, capitals, and punctuation only. They may add unrelated details, choose longer but awkward words, or move sentences without checking whether the new order makes sense.
How to Assess It
- Give students a four-sentence rough paragraph. Ask them to add a useful detail, improve the order, and rewrite one sentence for smoother flow and stronger words.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a rough paragraph on sentence strips. Students reorder it, replace two weak words, and combine two choppy sentences.
Ask, “Which revision most helps the reader, and why?” Students compare two versions and point to a change in ideas, order, fluency, or wording.
Play Revision Relay. Teams rotate through four stations to add detail, reorder sentences, smooth a sentence, and replace vague words.
Have students revise a school announcement so classmates can quickly understand the event, schedule, and needed materials.
