What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students reread drafts and correct errors in capitalization, word use, punctuation, spelling, and format. They use feedback from classmates or adults to decide what to change.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students reread a draft more than once, checking one convention at a time. They make accurate corrections and use peer feedback, dictionaries, or classroom references when unsure.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think spell-check finds every error, including wrong words such as their and there. They may also correct spelling but overlook capitals, punctuation, verb forms, or document format.
How to Assess It
- Give students a four-sentence draft with six errors in capitals, punctuation, spelling, and usage. Ask them to edit it and explain one correction.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs sentence strips with convention errors, then have them mark corrections and rebuild each sentence correctly.
Ask students to write three sentences about recess, swap papers, and explain one suggested edit to a partner.
Play Editing Relay with teams correcting one capitalization, punctuation, usage, or spelling error before passing the draft.
Have students edit a class event notice before it is posted or sent home.
