What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students reread a draft and check spelling, capitalization, word use, and punctuation. With an adult or checklist, they find errors and make clear corrections.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students use a checklist and adult feedback to find errors in a short draft. They correct common spelling, capitalization, punctuation, and usage errors without changing the intended meaning.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often read what they meant to write and miss omitted words or punctuation. They may capitalize random words or use periods for questions. Some rewrite the whole piece instead of correcting conventions.
How to Assess It
- Give students three sentences containing a misspelling, a missing capital, and incorrect punctuation. Ask them to mark and correct each error using an editing checklist.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a printed paragraph, colored pencils, and an editing key to mark missing capitals, punctuation, misspellings, and usage errors.
Ask, "Which correction helps the reader most, and why?" then have students write the corrected sentence.
Play Editing Detective, where teams earn one point for finding an error and another for making the correct change.
Students edit a draft class announcement before posting it, checking names, capitals, spelling, commas, and ending punctuation.
