What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students reread drafts and correct errors in grammar, usage, punctuation, capitalization, and spelling. They also revise sentences so the wording, tone, and level of formality fit the purpose and audience.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can find and correct errors in grammar, punctuation, capitalization, and sentence structure. They can also improve word choice, sentence flow, and tone while keeping the writer’s meaning intact.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat editing as simple spell-checking or replace clear words with longer ones. They may also miss shifts in tense, vague pronouns, sentence fragments, agreement errors, and tone that does not fit the audience.

How to Assess It

Give students a five-sentence paragraph containing six errors in conventions, style, and word choice. Ask them to revise it and briefly explain two changes.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Print a flawed paragraph, then have pairs cut apart sentences, repair errors, and arrange them into a clear final version.

  2. Ask students to revise the same school announcement for a principal, a friend, and a public website, then explain each language choice.

  3. Run an editing relay where teams correct one marked sentence at a time and name the rule before passing the paper.

  4. Compare a casual text message with a workplace email, then have students rewrite each for the other audience without changing the main message.
