What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students reread a draft and make meaningful changes to its ideas, order, sentence flow, and word choice. They ask for feedback, consider suggestions, and revise again when needed.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students make changes that add useful details, improve the order, smooth awkward sentences, and replace vague words. They use peer or teacher feedback and can explain how each change improves the draft.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think revising means fixing spelling, punctuation, or handwriting. They may replace simple words with longer words that do not fit. Some accept every peer suggestion without deciding whether it improves the draft.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short, weak paragraph. Ask them to make four labeled revisions, one each for detail, organization, sentence flow, and precise word choice.

Ways to Teach It
Cut a draft into sentence strips, reorder the strips for clarity, then add one detail and two transitions.
Partners read drafts aloud and discuss where ideas feel unclear, out of order, repetitive, or vague before each writer revises.
Play Revision Relay, where teams draw cards labeled detail, order, fluency, or word choice and improve one shared paragraph.
Revise a confusing school announcement so families can quickly understand the event, schedule, location, and needed materials.
