What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students reread a draft and find places where the message is unclear, out of order, choppy, or vague. They use feedback to add, remove, move, or replace words and sentences.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can identify a weak spot in a draft and make a useful change. The revised piece has clearer details, a sensible order, smoother sentences, and more exact words.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think revising means fixing spelling, capitals, and punctuation. They may also change every sentence a partner marks, rather than deciding which suggestions improve the piece.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short, uneven paragraph and ask them to make two revisions. They must label how each change improves meaning, order, flow, or wording.

Ways to Teach It
Print a paragraph on sentence strips, then have pairs reorder, combine, and replace strips to improve clarity and flow.
Ask students to compare two versions of a paragraph and write which version is stronger, citing one specific revision.
Play Revision Relay, where teams draw cards labeled details, order, flow, or words and revise one matching part of a shared draft.
Have students revise a school announcement so families can quickly understand the event, date, location, and needed materials.
