What Students Need to Do

Students reread a draft and improve its ideas, order, sentence flow, and word choice. With feedback and tools, they also correct format, capitalization, usage, punctuation, and spelling.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can add, remove, reorder, or replace parts of a draft to make it clearer and smoother. They can correct grade-level capitalization, punctuation, usage, spelling, and format with feedback and reference tools.

Common Misconceptions

Students often think revising means fixing spelling or making a neat copy. They may accept every peer suggestion without deciding whether it improves the draft, or trust spell-check to catch every error.

How to Assess It

Give students a short paragraph with weak order, repetitive sentences, and four convention errors. Ask them to make two revisions and four edits, labeling each change.

   Cut apart sentences from a printed draft, reorder them for clarity, tape them down, and add one missing detail.

   Compare two versions of a paragraph and write which changes improve ideas, organization, sentence flow, or word choice.
