What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students reread their own short writing with an adult and look for mistakes. They fix familiar spelling, sentence capitals, basic word use, and ending punctuation.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students reread a short piece and use a simple checklist to find errors. With prompts, they correct sentence capitals, end marks, common spelling, and basic word use.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may capitalize every word or forget capitals at sentence beginnings and in names. They may add periods after each line, overlook missing words, or expect invented spelling to match standard spelling.
How to Assess It
- Give students: “my dog run fast he is blak.” Ask them to rewrite it with correct capitals, punctuation, usage, and spelling.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs sentence strips, capital letter cards, punctuation cards, and word tiles to repair three short sentences.
Display a flawed sentence and ask, “What should we fix first, and why?” then have students write the corrected sentence.
Play Editing Detective by having students circle one hidden capitalization, spelling, usage, or punctuation error on each task card.
Have students edit a classroom sign or lunch note so its capitals, spelling, word use, and punctuation are clear to readers.
