What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students revise drafts so ideas are clear, accurate, and supported with enough relevant detail. They evaluate their own and others' writing, then edit grammar, punctuation, word choice, sentence style, and tone.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can identify weak or confusing parts of a draft and make changes that improve meaning. They use specific peer feedback, check facts and details, and correct conventions without changing the writer's purpose.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat revision as fixing spelling and punctuation only. They may add details that do not support the main point or accept every peer suggestion without judging it. They also may give vague feedback such as "add more" instead of naming a specific change.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short paragraph with one unclear idea, one unsupported claim, and three convention errors. Ask them to revise it and label each change as clarity, elaboration, accuracy, or editing.

Ways to Teach It
Use three highlighters to mark unclear ideas, unsupported claims, and convention errors in a sample draft, then revise each marked section.
Ask students to write one strength and one specific revision suggestion for a partner's paragraph, citing the exact sentence involved.
Run an editing relay where teams correct projected sentences for grammar, punctuation, word choice, and clarity, explaining each change.
Have students revise a confusing school announcement so families can understand the event, deadline, location, and required actions.
