What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students reread a draft from a reader’s point of view. They replace vague or confusing language, correct details that do not match the evidence, and explain ideas that feel thin. They keep details that support the purpose.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can spot a confusing sentence, an unsupported claim, or a detail that conflicts with a source. The revised draft uses precise wording, accurate information, and enough evidence and explanation for the reader to follow the point.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often treat revision as proofreading for spelling and commas. They may add length without adding useful evidence or explanation. They may also assume a confident claim is accurate without checking the source.
How to Assess It
- Post this paragraph: “The library should stay open later because students need it. It closes at 5 p.m. Friday, but the posted schedule says 4 p.m.” Ask students to correct the conflict and add two sentences explaining who needs later hours and why.

Ways to Teach It
Print a short draft, mark unclear claims, unsupported points, and questionable facts with different colored highlighters, then revise one example of each.
Discuss what a skeptical reader would ask, then write two sentences explaining how one piece of evidence supports the claim.
Run a revision relay where teams improve vague, inaccurate, or underdeveloped sentences and explain each change.
Revise a mock school announcement so dates, directions, reasons, and needed details are clear to students and families.
