What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students reread drafts to find vague ideas, inaccurate details, and places where readers need more information. They replace unclear wording, verify claims, and add relevant evidence or explanation.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can find vague claims, missing explanations, and details that conflict with a source. The student makes focused changes that clarify the message, correct errors, and add useful information.

Common Misconceptions

Students often treat revision as fixing spelling, punctuation, and grammar only. They may add extra sentences that repeat ideas or include details that are unsupported, irrelevant, or inaccurate.

How to Assess It

Give students this source note: “The survey found 62% of juniors support later start times.” Ask them to correct and develop: “Most students want school to start later.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give students three highlighters to mark unclear wording, unchecked facts, and ideas needing development in a draft, then revise one marked section.

  2. Have pairs compare two revisions of the same paragraph and explain which one gives readers clearer, more accurate, and more complete information.

  3. Run a revision relay where teams use a short fact sheet to correct and strengthen one paragraph without adding unsupported details.

  4. Ask students to revise a school event announcement using the actual schedule, location, cost, and attendance rules.
