What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students plan, draft, and revise a multi-paragraph piece with a clear voice and consistent tone. They replace vague or dull words with precise, vivid language that strengthens meaning.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student creates a clear voice that fits the purpose and audience. Word choices are exact, vivid, and consistent with the intended tone across several paragraphs.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat vivid language as adding many adjectives or choosing long words. They may also shift tone without purpose or confuse the writer's voice with a character's dialogue.
How to Assess It
- Give students a bland paragraph and ask them to revise five words to create a tense tone. They must underline each change and explain one choice.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a bland paragraph, word cards, and highlighters, then have them replace vague words to create a specific tone.
Write the same event as a thrilled fan and a disappointed coach, then discuss which words reveal each voice.
Play a tone sort by matching sentence cards to labels such as tense, playful, respectful, or bitter, then defend each match.
Compare two restaurant reviews with different ratings, then revise neutral menu descriptions to show praise or disappointment through precise word choice.
