What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students choose precise words and relevant details that support the main point of a multi-paragraph piece. They revise those choices to create an intended tone and a consistent voice.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student selects precise words and relevant details that strengthen the main point. The student keeps a clear tone and recognizable voice across several paragraphs and explains key revision choices.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may use advanced words that sound awkward or change the meaning. They may add interesting details that do not support the main point, or shift between formal and casual language.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short paragraph with weak words and one unrelated detail. Ask them to replace two words, remove or revise the detail, and name the intended tone.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups word and detail cards to sort under serious, humorous, or hopeful tones, then use one set to revise a paragraph.
Have students write the same school announcement for a principal and a close friend, then compare vocabulary, details, tone, and voice.
Play Revision Relay, where teams replace vague words and remove unrelated details from projected paragraphs without changing the central idea.
Compare two product reviews aimed at different audiences, then revise one review so its word choice and details fit the other audience.
