What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students choose specific words, details, and sentence patterns that give writing a recognizable voice. They adjust the tone for the topic, purpose, and audience. They revise several connected paragraphs so every word supports the intended meaning.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can revise connected paragraphs so the language sounds purposeful and consistent. Word choices create clear images, fit the audience, and strengthen meaning without becoming repetitive or exaggerated.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may replace simple words with long words that sound unnatural or change the meaning. They may confuse voice with tone, add too many adjectives, or shift from serious to casual language without a reason.
How to Assess It
- Give students a flat six-sentence paragraph. Ask them to revise three word choices to create a clear voice and tone, then explain one change.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs bland and vivid word cards, then have them replace weak words in a sample paragraph and defend each choice.
Ask students to describe the same rainy morning in a hopeful tone and an annoyed tone, then compare their language choices.
Play a precise verb challenge where teams replace verbs like went, said, and looked without changing the sentence's meaning.
Have students rewrite a school event announcement for classmates and for parents, adjusting voice, tone, and vocabulary for each audience.
