What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students choose and organize ideas that fit the topic, purpose, audience, and type of writing. They develop focused paragraphs using precise details and words that support a clear tone and voice.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student selects details that clearly support one main idea and arranges them in a logical order. The paragraph uses specific nouns, strong verbs, descriptive details, and language suited to the audience and genre.

Common Misconceptions

Students may include interesting details that do not support the main idea. They may treat longer words as precise words or shift between formal and casual language. Some organize details in the order they thought of them rather than a clear sequence.

How to Assess It

Give students four facts about a topic and ask them to write one focused paragraph for a school newsletter. Check for a clear order, relevant details, precise words, and a suitable tone.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups sentence strips with mixed details, then have them remove unrelated ideas and arrange the remaining details into a clear paragraph plan.

  2. Ask students to explain how word choice should change when writing about a field trip for a friend versus the principal.

  3. Play a word swap relay where teams replace vague words in a paragraph with precise nouns, strong verbs, and useful descriptions.

  4. Have students write a short school event announcement for families, choosing details and language that create a clear, welcoming tone.
