What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students generate several ideas, choose details that fit the topic, and place them in a logical order before drafting. They shape their choices for the intended reader, purpose, and text type.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a prompt, students can choose a focused main idea and three relevant details. They arrange the details logically and write a paragraph that fits the reader, purpose, and text type.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may include every idea they think of, even when details do not fit the main topic. They may confuse the broad topic with a focused main idea or arrange details without considering the reader.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Write a paragraph explaining to a new classmate how to prepare for recess. List four ideas, cross out one unrelated idea, order the others, then draft.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs mixed sentence strips and have them select a topic sentence, remove unrelated details, and arrange the remaining sentences logically.
Ask students to plan a paragraph answering, “What classroom rule should a new student understand, and why?”
Play Detail Detective by showing a topic and five details, then awarding points for finding and explaining the unrelated detail.
Have students write a paragraph for a substitute teacher that explains one class routine in a clear, useful order.
