What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students develop a focused question and revise it when the topic is too broad or narrow. They gather notes from print, digital, primary, and secondary sources, then judge each source's relevance and trustworthiness. They combine findings in their own words, cite sources, and use websites and AI responsibly.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can select strong sources, explain why each is useful, and keep notes that separate quotations, summaries, and paraphrases. The student can combine ideas across sources into a clear response, leave out weak information, and attach complete citations. Any AI assisted work is checked against reliable sources and clearly acknowledged.

Common Misconceptions

Students often treat the first search result as credible or keep a source just because it mentions the topic. They may think changing a few words makes a paraphrase, or forget that paraphrases still need citations. They may copy AI output without checking facts, naming the tool, or following class rules.

How to Assess It

Give students short excerpts about later school start times from the CDC and an unsigned blog. Ask them to choose the stronger source, explain why, paraphrase one fact, and add a citation.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Sort printed source cards into use, verify, and reject piles, then record one reason and one note from each usable source.

  2. Write a focused question about school start times, then explain how you would narrow it after reading two short articles.

  3. Play Paraphrase Match by pairing fact cards with accurate paraphrases, summaries, quotations, and citations while flagging copied wording.

  4. Investigate cafeteria waste using a student survey, a school policy, and a news article, then present a cited recommendation.
