What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students group research findings into clear categories and choose details that support a main point. They present the information clearly through speaking or writing, using a format that fits the audience and purpose.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can build a logical sequence with an introduction, grouped evidence, transitions, and a conclusion. The student adjusts tone, wording, visuals, and detail for a class discussion, formal presentation, or written report.

Common Misconceptions

Students may list facts in the order they found them instead of grouping related ideas. They may use casual language in a formal report, omit source names, or read slides word for word without explaining the findings.

How to Assess It

Give students five notes about school start times and ask them to create a three-part outline, then deliver a 60-second summary for the principal. Check for logical grouping, useful evidence, and an appropriate formal tone.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs eight fact cards about sleep, then have them sort the cards under headings and build a one-page display.

  2. Ask students to write two versions of one finding, an email to the principal and a text to a friend.

  3. Play Audience Switch: students draw audience and format cards, then reshape the same three facts into a brief response.

  4. Have students survey classmates about cafeteria choices, summarize the results, and present one recommendation to the lunch manager.
