What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students select a clear structure for their research based on purpose and audience. They communicate a main point, supporting evidence, and source information in an appropriate tone and format.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students present a focused main point, group related evidence, and use transitions to connect ideas. They match their tone and level of detail to the audience and name their sources.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may list facts without grouping them around a clear point. They may also use the same tone for a research report and a casual class update, or leave sources unnamed.
How to Assess It
- Give students four source notes about school start times. Ask for a one-paragraph summary or one-minute briefing with a main point, logical order, and named sources.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups printed evidence cards to arrange into an opening, two clear sections, and a conclusion, then explain their choices.
Ask students to write how they would present the same findings to the principal, classmates, and a close friend.
Play Audience Switch: teams draw an audience and format card, then reshape the same three findings for that situation.
Use class survey data on cafeteria waste to create a short written report or oral briefing for the school administration.
