What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students group related facts and arrange them in a clear order. They choose useful details, then communicate them through speaking, writing, or a visual.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students sort facts into clear groups and use headings or a logical sequence. They select accurate details and present them clearly. Their speaking, writing, or visuals help the audience understand the topic.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may list facts in the order they found them instead of grouping related ideas. They may add unrelated details or copy source wording. Visual displays may include pictures that do not clarify the information.
How to Assess It
- Give students six facts about an animal. Ask them to group the facts under headings and create a one-minute oral report or labeled visual.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups fact cards and chart paper, then have them sort the cards, add headings, and create a simple poster.
Ask students to write: Which three details best explain this topic, and why do they belong together?
Play Category Challenge, where teams sort mixed fact cards under headings and earn points by explaining each choice.
Have students create a one-page guide for new students that explains school routines with headings, short details, and labeled pictures.
