What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students credit words, ideas, images, and media taken from other people or tools. They check information before using or sharing it. When using AI, they follow class rules, protect personal information, and explain how the tool helped.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students use quotation marks, accurate paraphrases, and complete source details. They check claims against reliable sources and explain why a source is trustworthy. They disclose AI help and avoid sharing private information.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think a web link alone counts as a citation or that changing a few words prevents plagiarism. They may assume AI output is accurate, original, and does not need disclosure. Some enter names, photos, or private details into online tools without checking privacy risks.

How to Assess It

Give students a short web excerpt and an AI-generated claim. Ask them to write a cited paraphrase, flag one reliability concern, and state how AI use should be disclosed.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Use printed source cards to sort examples into acceptable paraphrase, direct quotation, plagiarism, weak evidence, and unsafe sharing.

  2. Discuss whether AI should help with homework, then name one allowed use, one misuse, and one rule for disclosing help.

  3. Play Citation Repair Relay, with teams correcting missing authors, titles, quotation marks, and links in four sample paragraphs.

  4. Examine a viral post, trace its claim to the original source, and write a two-sentence reliability verdict.
