What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students make careful choices when using websites, AI tools, images, data, and other people’s words or ideas. They check accuracy, credit sources, disclose technology use, respect copyright, and protect private information.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students verify claims before using them and distinguish direct quotes, paraphrases, summaries, and generated content. They cite sources, disclose AI help, follow usage rights, and protect private information. They can explain why each choice is responsible.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think a citation makes any use ethical, even when a source is unreliable or quoted out of context. They may treat AI output as original, omit disclosure, or enter private information into a tool. Some confuse paraphrasing with changing a few words.

How to Assess It

Give an exit ticket with a student paragraph that includes an uncited quote, an AI-generated claim, and personal data. Ask students to identify each problem and revise one item.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs a news article, its linked study, and an AI summary; have them verify three claims and record mismatches.

  2. Ask students to write: When should AI assistance be disclosed, and what details should the disclosure include?

  3. Run a card sort with scenarios labeled acceptable, revise, or unacceptable; require students to justify each placement with one specific reason.

  4. Have students draft a workplace email using one cited statistic and an AI-assisted sentence, then add a clear disclosure note.
