What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students pull useful facts, ideas, and quotations from at least two texts. They label where each note came from and group related notes in a chart, outline, or two-column page. They use those groups to explain a combined idea, not just list each source separately.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student paraphrases accurately, uses short quotations only when wording matters, and keeps source labels attached to notes. The student groups matching, differing, and conflicting information, then writes a clear conclusion supported by more than one source.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often copy whole sentences, lose track of which source supplied a detail, or record facts unrelated to the question. They may summarize each source separately instead of connecting ideas, or assume sources agree when their claims conflict.
How to Assess It
- Give students three short paragraphs on school start times. Ask them to complete a chart labeled Shared Ideas, Differences, and Sources, then write a two-sentence synthesis.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs three short articles and sticky notes; students sort notes into shared ideas, unique details, and conflicting claims.
Ask students to write, "What do all three sources suggest, and where do they differ?" using one detail from each source.
Run a note sorting relay where teams place source cards under paraphrase, quotation, summary, or irrelevant detail, then explain each choice.
Have students compare two product reviews and a price chart, then recommend one item in a brief buyer's note.
