What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students write clearly in print and cursive, including a readable first and last name signature. They spell words by matching sounds to letters, dividing syllables, and using roots and affixes. They write common grade-level words quickly and correctly.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Their print and cursive are easy to read, with consistent letter shapes, spacing, and connections. They sign their first and last name clearly. They spell common words from memory and use sound, syllable, root, prefix, and suffix clues for new words.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse cursive letters such as b and f, skip connections, or crowd words together. Some spell only by sound, writing diferent for different, and overlook syllables or word parts. Others guess at common words instead of recalling familiar spelling patterns.
How to Assess It
- Dictate because, different, hopeful, careless, disagreement, and transportation. Students write a sentence using two words in print, copy it in cursive, and sign their full name.

Ways to Teach It
Use letter tiles to build multisyllabic words, then have students separate syllables and identify each root, prefix, or suffix.
Ask students to compare two spellings of careless and explain which sound, syllable, and suffix clues prove the correct choice.
Play a relay where teams hear a word, write it legibly in cursive, and earn points for spelling, spacing, and letter joins.
Have students complete a library card in print, sign their full name in cursive, and proofread every word for legibility and spelling.
