What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students connect sounds in common grade-level words to the letters and letter patterns that represent them. They read those words quickly and spell them correctly from dictation or in their own writing.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student reads a mixed list of familiar words smoothly, without guessing from the first letter. The student spells the same words accurately and identifies regular patterns and unusual parts.
Common Misconceptions
- Some students guess words from the first letter or overall shape. Others spell words exactly as they sound, writing sed for said or wuz for was. A student may pass a spelling test but pause over the same words while reading.
How to Assess It
- Flash five common words for two seconds each and have students read them aloud. Then dictate the same words in a new order and check speed and spelling.

Ways to Teach It
Use letter tiles to build eight common words, say each sound, then mark any spelling that does not match the expected sound.
Ask students to explain in writing how knowing the word part ight helps them read and spell light, night, and right.
Play Word Flash: reveal a word for two seconds, hide it, then have students read it aloud and write it from memory.
Have students find ten common words on a lunch menu, school notice, or website and make a personal practice list.
