What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students break familiar, frequently used words into sounds and match those sounds to letters or letter groups. They read and spell the words quickly without guessing.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a mixed list or short passage, students recognize target words immediately and pronounce them correctly. In dictation, they spell the same words accurately and self-correct errors.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may memorize a word's shape, guess from its first letter, or rely on context instead of checking every sound. They may use one letter per sound, missing vowel teams, silent letters, or less common spellings.
How to Assess It
- Show five high-frequency words for students to read aloud, then dictate the same words in a different order. Record reading speed and spelling accuracy.

Ways to Teach It
Have pairs build eight target words with letter tiles, slide one counter for each sound, then mark unexpected spellings on a sound map.
Ask students to explain in writing, “Which part of because is predictable from sound, and which part must you remember?”
Play Word Sort Relay: students draw a card, read it, then place it under vowel team, silent letter, or regular pattern.
Use a school lunch menu; students circle high-frequency words, read them aloud, then write three correctly in a message to a classmate.
