What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students connect the sounds they hear in common words to letters and letter groups. They apply known spelling patterns and remember unexpected parts. They write these words quickly without copying.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students write taught words correctly during dictation and in their own sentences. They recall spellings quickly and can point out any part that does not follow a familiar sound pattern.

Common Misconceptions

Students may write only the first and last sounds, leaving out middle vowels. They may spell every word exactly as it sounds, such as writing "sed" for "said." Some reverse letter order in words such as "was" and "saw."

How to Assess It

Dictate five recently taught words, one every five seconds, and use each in a sentence. Check for correct spelling without a word bank or teacher prompts.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Have students build five common words with magnetic letters, say each sound, then cover the model and rebuild each word from memory.

  2. Ask students to circle the surprising part in each word and explain what they must remember when spelling it.

  3. Play a partner spelling game where one student reads a word card and the other writes the word, then partners check the card.

  4. Have students write a short classroom note using five assigned words, then proofread the spellings with a word wall.
