What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students write clearly in print and cursive, including a readable first and last name signature. They spell words using sound patterns, syllables, roots, and affixes. Common words are read and spelled quickly and accurately.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Writing is readable, evenly spaced, and consistent in both print and cursive. Students sign their full name and spell grade-level words accurately without frequent pauses or guesses.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat cursive as decorative and sacrifice readability for speed. They may spell only by sound, ignore syllable boundaries, or miss how prefixes and suffixes affect spelling.
How to Assess It
- Dictate five words, such as beautiful, disagreement, transportation, necessary, and responsible. Have students write one sentence in print, copy it in cursive, and add their signature.

Ways to Teach It
Build words with letter tiles, divide them into syllables, then write each word once in print and once in cursive.
Ask, “How do roots and affixes help you spell disagreement, preview, and careless?” Students explain in three sentences.
Play a spelling sort game where teams group word cards by sound pattern, syllable pattern, root, prefix, or suffix.
Complete a mock permission form using clear print for personal details, accurate spelling for responses, and cursive for the signature.
