What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students learn new words from read-alouds, independent reading, conversations, and content lessons. They use context, roots, prefixes, suffixes, synonyms, and antonyms to determine meaning. They also compare shades of meaning and use new words in speaking and writing.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students infer a new word’s meaning from sentence clues and familiar word parts. They choose the correct homophone in context, compare similar words, and use new vocabulary accurately when speaking or writing.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat prefixes and suffixes as part of the root instead of noticing how they change meaning. They may choose a homophone by sound alone or assume similar verbs mean exactly the same thing.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “Mia unpacked her bag.” Ask students to define unpacked, underline the context clue, and explain what un- and -ed mean.

Ways to Teach It
Sort root, prefix, and suffix cards, build words such as replayed and jumping, then explain how each word part changes meaning.
Discuss how stroll, walk, march, and stomp differ, then write a sentence that makes one verb the best choice.
Play a homophone match by pairing cards such as sea and see with sentence cards, then read each completed sentence aloud.
Read a weather forecast, collect five unfamiliar words, infer their meanings from context, then present a forecast using them.
