What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students take turns, listen without interrupting, and speak clearly about a shared text or topic. They connect comments to others’ ideas, ask relevant questions, answer with details, and request clarification.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student takes turns, stays focused on the speaker, and refers to a classmate’s idea before adding a new point. The student asks useful questions, gives clear answers, and explains what needs clarification.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think listening means staying quiet while planning what to say next. They may repeat an idea instead of adding to it, ask unrelated questions, or give answers without enough detail.
How to Assess It
- After a short read-aloud, ask trios to discuss why a character made a choice. Check whether each student adds one idea, asks one relevant question, and requests clarification when needed.

Ways to Teach It
Give each student two counters; they move one into a cup after each comment, then check that everyone contributed.
After a read-aloud, ask, "Which choice helped solve the problem?" Students respond using, "I agree with ___ because..."
Play Question Coach: partners draw topic cards, ask one information question and one clarification question, then earn a point for relevant answers.
Have groups plan a class snack survey, taking turns to ask preferences, confirm totals, and explain the group’s choice.
