What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students ask clear questions during discussions to learn missing details or check whether they understood correctly. They answer others with relevant information from the topic or text.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student asks focused questions that help fill in missing information or check a detail. The student gives relevant answers and uses details from the text or conversation.

Common Misconceptions

Students may make comments instead of asking questions, or ask about details they already know. They may answer off topic, give only yes or no, or fail to explain what they understood.

How to Assess It

Read a short paragraph aloud, then pair students. Each student asks one question to learn a detail and one question to check understanding, while the partner answers both.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs question cards to sort into learn something new or check understanding, then have them ask and answer each question.

  2. After a shared reading, ask students to write one missing-detail question and one checking question, then discuss answers with a partner.

  3. Play Mystery Bag, where students ask focused questions about a hidden object and respond using clues already shared.

  4. Role-play planning a class picnic, with students asking and answering questions about food, weather, supplies, and responsibilities.
