What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students ask clear questions during discussions to learn missing details or check whether they understood correctly. They answer others with relevant information from the topic or text.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student asks focused questions that help fill in missing information or check a detail. The student gives relevant answers and uses details from the text or conversation.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may make comments instead of asking questions, or ask about details they already know. They may answer off topic, give only yes or no, or fail to explain what they understood.
How to Assess It
- Read a short paragraph aloud, then pair students. Each student asks one question to learn a detail and one question to check understanding, while the partner answers both.
