What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students ask clear, on-topic questions during partner, small group, and class conversations. They ask for help, gather details, or clear up confusion, then listen to the response.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students independently ask relevant questions such as, “What does that word mean?” or “Can you show me that step again?” They listen to the answer and ask a related follow-up question when needed.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may say, “I do not get it,” instead of naming what is confusing. They may ask unrelated questions, repeat answered questions, or direct every question to the teacher.
How to Assess It
- After a short read aloud, have each student ask a partner one question about a missing or confusing detail. Listen for a clear, relevant question.

Ways to Teach It

Pause during a read aloud and ask students to name one detail they want explained, then form a clear question.
Play Mystery Bag, where students ask yes or no questions to identify an object without seeing it.
Role-play asking a librarian for help finding a book, including one question about its topic or location.
