What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students take turns speaking and listening with a partner, small group, or class. They ask relevant questions to get help, gather details, or clear up confusion.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students ask a clear question when they need help or more information. They also ask follow-up questions when an answer does not make sense.

Common Misconceptions

Students may make a statement instead of asking a question. They may ask an unrelated question, repeat one already answered, or stay silent when confused.

How to Assess It

Show a picture of an unfamiliar tool and say, "Ask one question that would help you learn more about it." Listen for a relevant question.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Hide an object in a bag, then have students ask questions to identify it without touching it.

  2. After a read-aloud, prompt students: "What could you ask to understand the character's choice better?"

  3. Play Question Match by pairing classroom problems with useful questions, such as asking for directions when lost.

  4. Role-play asking a librarian, nurse, or cafeteria worker for help or information using a complete question.
