What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students ask clear questions to learn new details or check their understanding. They listen closely, answer relevantly, and connect their comments to another speaker’s idea.
What Mastery Looks Like
- During a discussion, the student asks relevant questions and answers with accurate details. The student refers to a classmate’s idea before adding, agreeing, or disagreeing.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may ask unrelated questions or repeat their own ideas without connecting to what others said. They may give one-word answers that do not provide or confirm useful information.
How to Assess It
- Give pairs a short paragraph about animal habitats. Each student asks one question for new information, one confirming question, and makes one connected comment.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a mystery object in a bag, then have them ask questions, confirm clues, and build on each other’s guesses.
After reading a story, ask, “Which choice changed the plot most?” Require each response to connect to a previous speaker’s idea.
Play Question Chain, where each student answers the last question, links to that answer, and asks a new relevant question.
Have groups plan a class celebration by asking about preferences, confirming details, and connecting suggestions to earlier comments.
