What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students listen closely, take turns, and connect their comments to what others have said. They explain their own ideas clearly in partner, group, and class discussions.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students listen without interrupting and respond to what another speaker said. They state their own idea clearly, then add a reason, example, question, or connection.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may repeat a classmate’s words without adding a new thought. They may interrupt, change the subject, or say they disagree without explaining why.
How to Assess It
- After a short read-aloud, ask pairs, “What lesson did the character learn?” Each student must restate the partner’s idea and add one related thought.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs linking cubes; each student paraphrases the last idea, adds a new thought, then adds one cube to a shared tower.
Discuss, “Which character made the best choice?” Require each student to name a classmate’s idea before explaining agreement or disagreement.
Play Conversation Relay: students draw cards labeled agree, add, question, or connect, then respond to the previous speaker using that move.
Hold a class meeting to choose a read-aloud; students build on two classmates’ reasons before voting.
