What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students listen closely during partner, group, and whole-class conversations. They connect their comments to what others said, then state their own ideas clearly and respectfully.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students wait for their turn, summarize another speaker’s point, and add a connected idea. They speak clearly and explain agreement or disagreement with a relevant reason.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may repeat a classmate’s comment without adding anything new. They may interrupt, change the subject, or disagree without explaining their reason.
How to Assess It
- Ask pairs to discuss which classroom job is most useful. Each student must name the partner’s idea, add a related point, and explain one personal opinion.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups linking cubes. Each student adds a cube after naming a classmate’s idea and adding one related thought.
After reading a folktale, ask students which character made the wisest choice and require each response to connect to a previous speaker.
Play Idea Relay. Students draw response stems such as “I agree because” or “I would add,” then respond to a partner.
Hold a class meeting about improving recess, with students acknowledging one suggestion before offering their own practical idea.
