What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students discuss grade-level texts and topics with different classmates for more than a brief exchange. They state their thinking clearly, listen, and connect their comments to what others said.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students take turns, listen closely, and refer to a classmate’s point before adding a new thought. They explain their own ideas clearly and disagree with respectful words.

Common Misconceptions

Students may repeat a classmate’s idea without adding anything new. They may interrupt, disagree with the person instead of the idea, or share opinions without evidence.

How to Assess It

Ask pairs to discuss whether a story character made a fair choice. Each student must state one idea, refer to the partner’s idea, and add a reason.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups linking cubes, one per comment, and have students connect a cube only when their comment builds on the previous speaker’s idea.

  2. Discuss the prompt, “Should students have homework?” then write one sentence that names and extends a classmate’s point.

  3. Play Discussion Relay with cards labeled agree, add, question, and challenge, requiring each speaker to use the drawn response move.

  4. Hold a class meeting about improving recess, with students responding to classmates before proposing a rule, activity, or equipment change.
