3.C.1 is a Standards of Learning standard. These are the knowledge and skills expectations under it.

What Students Need to Do

Students listen to classmates and follow shared rules for taking turns. They explain their ideas, connect comments to what others said, and ask useful questions. They stay involved from start to finish.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students take turns, face the speaker, and stay focused. They state an idea clearly, connect it to a classmate’s comment, and ask or answer a relevant question.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think active listening means staying quiet without responding. They may repeat an idea instead of adding to it, ask unrelated questions, or interrupt to share their own point.

How to Assess It

Pair students and ask, “Which classroom job helps our class most, and why?” Check whether each student responds to a partner, asks one related question, and adds an idea.

   Give groups linking cubes, adding one cube each time a student builds on a classmate’s idea during a text discussion.

   Ask, “Which character made the best choice?” Students state a claim, then respond directly to one classmate’s reason.

   Play Question Toss with a soft ball, where each catcher asks or answers a related question before passing it.

4. 04

   Have groups plan a class celebration, taking turns suggesting activities, asking for details, and agreeing on three choices.
