What Students Need to Do

Students listen during partner, small-group, and whole-class talks. They wait for a turn, stay on the topic, add to others' ideas, speak in complete sentences, and ask clear questions.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students take turns, look toward the speaker, and respond to what was said. They share a clear idea in a complete sentence and ask a useful question when they need help or details.

Common Misconceptions

Students may call out, interrupt, or repeat an idea without adding to it. They may give one-word answers, change the topic, or stay quiet when confused instead of asking a question.

How to Assess It

Show a picture and have partners discuss it for one minute. Check whether each student waits, shares one complete sentence, responds to a partner, and asks one relevant question.

   Give pairs a talking stick and a picture card, then have them take turns sharing one observation and one question.

   Read a short page aloud, then ask, "What did your partner notice, and what can you add?"

   Play Conversation Catch by passing a soft ball, with each catcher adding one related sentence before passing it.

   Role-play asking a librarian where to find a book, using a greeting, a complete question, and a polite response.
