What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students take turns speaking and listen closely to classmates. They respond to others, share clear ideas in full sentences, and keep the conversation on topic. They ask questions when they need help or more information.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student waits for a turn, stays on topic, and responds to what someone else said. The student shares ideas and needs in complete sentences. Questions are clear and help the student learn more or clear up confusion.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may stay quiet while another person speaks but not listen to the idea. They may repeat their own point instead of responding to a classmate. Some use sentence fragments, interrupt, or ask questions unrelated to the topic.
How to Assess It
- Give pairs the prompt, “Which read-aloud character made the best choice, and why?” Check each student for one relevant turn, one clear question, and one complete sentence connected to the partner’s idea.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups a talking token and picture cards; students take turns describing a card, then pass the token only after the speaker finishes.
Discuss which playground rule helps everyone most, with each student connecting one response to a classmate’s idea.
Play Conversation Match: students draw cards labeled ask, add, clarify, or agree, then use that move in a partner talk.
Role-play asking a librarian for help finding a book, using a complete sentence and one clarifying question.
