What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students listen to classmates and teachers during partner, group, and whole-class conversations. They wait for a turn, avoid interruptions, and make comments that match the topic.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students face the speaker, listen, and wait for an appropriate turn. They share a related idea and follow the class discussion rules with few reminders.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think active listening means staying quiet while planning what to say next. They may interrupt, repeat unrelated ideas, or speak without responding to the group’s topic.
How to Assess It
- Read a short picture book, then ask groups, “What did the character learn?” Use a checklist for listening, waiting, and staying on topic.

Ways to Teach It
Give each group a talking stick, picture cards, and one question, then have students pass the stick as each person answers.
Ask partners, “What helps everyone feel heard?” and have each pair write or draw one helpful discussion rule.
Play Topic Match by having students sort response cards into on-topic and off-topic groups, then explain each choice.
Hold a mock class meeting about choosing a recess game, with students taking turns, listening, and responding to classmates’ ideas.
