What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students join longer group conversations about grade-level topics and texts. They listen closely, take turns, follow class discussion rules, and respond to what others say.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students take turns, face the speaker, and wait until the speaker finishes. They paraphrase ideas, ask relevant questions, and add comments that connect to the topic or text.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think active listening means staying quiet while planning what to say next. They may interrupt, repeat earlier ideas, or disagree without referring to the speaker’s point. Some follow turn-taking rules but do not use details from the text.

How to Assess It

In groups of four, ask, “Which character made the best choice? Use one text detail and respond to a classmate.” Check whether each student listens, waits, and connects a comment to another speaker.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups four rule cards and six discussion chips; students turn over a chip after speaking and point to the rule they followed.

  2. After reading a short article, ask, “Which detail matters most, and how does your idea connect to a classmate’s point?”

  3. Play Conversation Relay: each student must paraphrase the previous speaker before adding a new idea, question, or text detail.

  4. Stage a playground planning meeting where teams choose one new recess option while following posted turn-taking and listening rules.
