What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students listen to the speaker, wait for an agreed signal or turn, and stay on topic. They respond to others with a related comment or question.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students wait for their turn, listen without interrupting, and keep comments connected to the topic. They can restate a classmate’s idea and add a relevant question or thought.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think listening means staying quiet while planning what to say next. They may call out, interrupt, change the subject, or repeat an idea without connecting to it.

How to Assess It

Have partners discuss, “What lesson did the character learn?” Use a checklist for taking turns, facing the speaker, and responding to a partner’s idea.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give each group one talking token, then have students sequence picture cards while passing the token before each comment.

  2. Ask, “How can you show someone you are listening?” and have students write one action before sharing with a partner.

  3. Play Listen and Add, where each student repeats a classmate’s idea before adding one related sentence.

  4. Hold a class meeting to choose a recess game, with students taking turns, responding to ideas, and following the agreed speaking rules.
